How Volume Converter works
One US gallon is 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups, 128 fluid ounces or 3.785412 liters. This converter does the gallon conversion in either direction and between any two of ten volume units: milliliters, liters, cubic meters, US teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts and gallons. Enter an amount, choose From and To, and the result appears with a table of the same volume in every unit, so one entry answers quarts, pints and cups at once. All the customary units here are US liquid measures. The imperial gallon used in the UK is about 20 percent larger and is not in the list; the page shows how to handle it.

The left pair and the right pair are separate lookups, not one row of equal volumes. A cubic meter, 1,000 liters, is 264.17 US gallons.

A quart is a little less than a liter: 1 liter is 1.0567 quarts.
US gallon, imperial gallon and dry gallon
Three different volumes are called a gallon. The US liquid gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 liters. It is the gallon on US fuel pumps and milk jugs, and the only one this converter uses.
The imperial gallon, used in the UK and for fuel economy figures in some other countries, is 4.54609 liters. That is 1.20095 US gallons, so an imperial gallon is about a fifth larger. Imperial pints and quarts are larger too: an imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, about 568 milliliters, against 473 milliliters for a US pint.
The US dry gallon, about 4.405 liters, is a rarely used measure for dry goods such as grain.
To convert imperial gallons with this tool, multiply them by 4.54609 and enter the answer as liters. Ten imperial gallons is 45.4609 liters; the table then shows the US equivalents.

The converter turns the input into liters, then divides by the size of the target unit in liters. The US units are built on the gallon of 3.785411784 liters: a quart is a quarter of that, a pint an eighth, a cup a sixteenth and a fluid ounce one 128th, which is 29.5735 milliliters.
