Quick answers

What is 3 business days from today?
Counting from a Monday or Tuesday it is the same week: Thursday or Friday. Counting from a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday the weekend is skipped, so it is the following Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
How long is 5 business days?
Five business days is one working week, which is seven calendar days including the weekend. Starting from any weekday, it ends on the same weekday one week later, provided no holiday falls in between.
How long is 10 business days?
Ten business days is two working weeks, or fourteen calendar days, with no holidays in the range. Each public holiday on a working day adds one more calendar day.
Does the start day count as day one?
No. The start day is excluded and counting begins the next working day, so one business day after a Friday is the following Monday.
Are weekends and holidays skipped?
Saturday and Sunday are skipped by default, and any date you list in the holidays box is skipped too. Public holidays are not built in because they differ by country and region.

Why use Add Business Days to a Date

This calculator answers the question behind searches like 3 business days from today or how long is 10 business days: given a start date and a number of working days, what date do you land on? It steps forward one day at a time, skipping Saturdays and Sundays unless you tick them as working days, and skipping any holiday you type in. The start day is never counted, so day one is the next working day. Enter a negative number to count backwards from a deadline instead.

How to get your result

  1. 1

Leave the Start date as today or pick another date.

  2. 2

Type how many business days to add. Use a negative number, such as -10, to count backwards.

  3. 3

Optionally tick Saturday or Sunday if your working week includes them.

  4. 4

Optionally paste holidays into the box, one date per line in YYYY-MM-DD form, and read the resulting date and the breakdown of skipped days.

Where this helps

Promising a delivery or refund window

A 3 to 5 business day promise made on a Thursday does not land on Sunday or Monday. Adding the days here gives the actual date to put in the confirmation email.

Working out a contract or notice deadline

Clauses such as within 10 business days of receipt start counting the day after receipt. Enter the receipt date and 10 to get the final day, then list any holidays that apply.

Planning a project milestone

Five working days of review after a Friday hand-off ends on the following Friday, seven calendar days later. The breakdown shows how many weekend days were skipped.

Counting back from a fixed date

A launch on the 20th needs sign-off 8 business days earlier. Enter -8 with the launch date to find the last safe day to approve.

Why 5 business days is usually 7 calendar days

A working week has five days and a calendar week has seven, so any run of business days that crosses a weekend takes longer on the calendar than on the clock. Starting from any weekday, five business days ends on the same weekday one week later, which is seven calendar days. Ten business days is fourteen calendar days, and three business days is three calendar days only when the count starts on a Monday or Tuesday, because starting from Wednesday, Thursday or Friday the weekend pushes the result to the following Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, five days out. Starting on a weekend is a special case: the first working day after it is Monday, so three business days from a Saturday is the following Wednesday. Public holidays stretch the count further, one extra calendar day for each holiday that falls on a working day inside the range, or more when it sits next to a weekend.

Business days, working days and banking days

These phrases are used loosely and the differences come from contracts, carriers and regulators rather than from any single standard. Most delivery estimates and service windows count Monday to Friday and skip public holidays. Banks and payment systems often exclude bank holidays and may treat Saturday differently for some operations. Some retailers and couriers include Saturday as a delivery day, which is why the tool lets you tick it. The one convention that is nearly universal is that the day something is received or ordered is not counted and the count begins the next working day, which is what this calculator does. When a deadline matters legally or financially, check which definition your agreement uses and list the specific holidays that apply to you, because holiday calendars differ by country, region and employer.

Tips

  • Paste a whole year of company holidays into the holidays box once and reuse it for every deadline.
  • If the result lands on a weekend you did not expect, check that Saturday and Sunday are unticked.
  • To count the working days between two known dates instead, use the business days calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Does the start day count as day one?
No. Counting begins on the next working day, so 1 business day after a Monday is Tuesday. This matches how delivery windows and contract deadlines are normally read.
How do I skip public holidays?
Type each holiday date into the holidays box in YYYY-MM-DD form, one per line. Any listed date that falls on a working day is skipped and shown in the breakdown.
Can I count backwards from a deadline?
Yes. Enter a negative number of business days, for example -10, to find the date that many working days before your start date.
What if my week includes Saturday?
Tick Count Saturday as a working day (or Sunday) and that day stops being skipped, which suits six-day retail or shift rosters.
