Why a date shifts weekday each year
A common year is 365 days, and 365 divided by 7 leaves a remainder of one. That single leftover day is why any fixed calendar date lands one weekday later each year: a birthday on a Tuesday falls on a Wednesday the following year. A leap year adds a second leftover day, so the shift becomes two weekdays across any 29 February boundary. Combining these produces a repeating cycle — the full pattern of dates and weekdays repeats every 28 years in the Gregorian calendar, provided the span avoids a skipped century leap year. The leap rule itself is more particular than most people remember: a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except when it is divisible by 100, unless it is also divisible by 400. That is why 2000 was a leap year while 1900 and 2100 are not, and it exists because the solar year is about 365.2422 days rather than a clean 365.25, so the simpler four-year rule overcorrects by roughly three days every four centuries.
Historical dates and the calendar switch
This calculator uses the proleptic Gregorian calendar, meaning it applies today's rules to every date including those before the Gregorian calendar existed. For anything within the last few centuries in most of the world that is exactly right, but it diverges from historical records for earlier dates, because countries adopted the new calendar at very different times. Catholic Europe switched in 1582, when 4 October was followed directly by 15 October. Britain and its colonies, including what became the United States, did not switch until 1752, skipping eleven days that September. Russia held out until 1918. A date recorded in a British document from 1700 was written under the Julian calendar, so the weekday named in that record may differ from what this calculator returns for the same date. Historians handle this by labelling dates Old Style or New Style, and any date before a country's switch needs that context to be interpreted correctly.
