How many days until Christmas?: Subtract today's day-of-year from December 25. On October 13, 2026 there are 73 days until Christmas Day, which is 10 weeks and 3 days. On December 1 of any year there are 24 days left, and on December 24 there is 1.
How do I work out how many days until a date?: Count the days left in the current month, add the full months in between, then add the day number of the target date. From October 13 to December 25: 18 days left in October, 30 in November and 25 in December, a total of 73 days.
Does a days until count include today?: Normally no. The count is the number of midnights between the two dates, so tomorrow is 1 day away and today is 0. This is also the number of sleeps. Add 1 if you need to count both the first and the last day, as some hire and leave periods do.
How many working days until a date?: Count only the Mondays to Fridays in the span. Every full week contains 5, so 10 full weeks give 50, and the leftover days are checked one by one. From Tuesday, October 13, 2026 to Friday, December 25, 2026 there are 53 working days and 20 weekend days, before removing public holidays.
How many weeks until a date?: Divide the number of days by 7. The whole number is the weeks and the remainder is the extra days. 73 days is 10 weeks and 3 days; 245 days is exactly 35 weeks.

The formula for days between today and a future date

Days until = target date - start date, counted in whole calendar days. Weeks = floor(days / 7), remainder = days mod 7. Hours = days x 24.

Both dates are treated as midnight at the start of the day, so the answer is always a whole number and is not affected by clock changes for daylight saving. Leap days are included automatically: a count that crosses February 29 is one day longer. Months are counted differently because months are not all the same length. The calculator steps forward from the earlier date one calendar month at a time for as long as it does not pass the later date, then counts the days left over. If the start day does not exist in a later month, the last day of that month is used, so one month after January 31 is February 28 (or February 29 in a leap year).

Working days, weekends and what the count leaves out

Working days here means Mondays to Fridays. The span runs from the day after the earlier date up to and including the later date, the same span used for the total, so working days plus weekend days always equals the total number of days.

Public holidays are not removed. They differ between countries, states and employers, and some move each year. To get a true working-day figure, subtract the holidays that fall on a weekday inside your range. Between October 13 and December 25, 2026 a United States worker would subtract Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day itself, taking 53 down to 50.

Questions people ask

Can I count days since a date instead of days until?

Yes. Put the past date in Target date. The first box changes to Days since and every other figure describes the time that has passed. Counting back from October 13, 2026, January 1, 2026 was 285 days ago.

Why does Count from not always show my local date around midnight?

The page fills in today's date when it loads, using Coordinated Universal Time. Close to midnight in time zones far from UTC it can be one day ahead of or behind your calendar. Check the field and correct it if needed; the calculation itself uses exactly the dates shown.

Does the calculator count hours and minutes to an event time?

No. It works in whole days, and the Hours box is simply the day count multiplied by 24. For a countdown to a time of day, add the hours left today and the hours into the target day yourself.

How are leap years handled?

Every real calendar day is counted, so February 29 is included when the span crosses it. February 29, 2024 to February 28, 2025 is 365 days and is shown as 12 months plus 0 days.

Which holidays are in the countdown table?

New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Western Easter Sunday, Mother's Day and Father's Day on their United States dates, United States Independence Day, Halloween, United States Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. The list cannot be edited; use Target date for anything else.

How far ahead or back can I count?

Any dates from year 1 to year 9999 are accepted. January 1, 2000 to January 1, 2100 returns 36,525 days, 1,200 months and 26,090 working days.
