Why use Birth Year Calculator
Enter an age and the date it applies to, and this birth year calculator returns the year of birth. Because age goes up on the birthday and not on January 1, a whole-number age fits two calendar years: the reference year minus the age if that year's birthday has already happened, and one year earlier if it has not. The tool shows both, narrows to one when you say which case applies, and gives the earliest and latest possible date of birth. Someone who is 30 on October 13, 2026 was born in 1995 or 1996, between October 14, 1995 and October 13, 1996. A chart for ages 1 to 100 is built for the year you pick.

The birth year formula
Birth year = reference year - age (birthday already passed that year). Birth year = reference year - age - 1 (birthday still to come that year).
Take an age of 30 on October 13, 2026. If the 2026 birthday has passed, the person turned 30 in 2026, so they were born in 2026 - 30 = 1996. If it has not, they turned 30 during 2025 and were born in 2025 - 30 = 1995. The date window follows from the same idea. The latest possible date of birth is the reference date moved back by the age, here October 13, 1996: that person turns 30 on the day itself. The earliest is one day after the reference date moved back by age plus 1, here October 14, 1995: that person turns 31 the next day.
Worked examples: one year, two years and edge cases
Age only, birthday unknown
Age in years 30; Age as of October 13, 2026; Birthday in that year Not sure
Birth year 1995 or 1996. Earliest date of birth October 14, 1995; latest date of birth October 13, 1996. Age reached during 2026: 30 or 31.
Birthday known to have passed
Age in years 36; Age as of July 4, 2026; Birthday in that year Already happened

Birthday still to come

Birth year 1995, born between October 14 and December 31.
Age on the last day of the year

Birth year 2008 only. Earliest date of birth January 1, 2008; latest December 31, 2008. The still-to-come box reads Not possible.
On December 31 every birthday of the year has happened, so the two-year ambiguity disappears.

Birth year 2025 or 2026, born between October 14, 2025 and October 13, 2026.

Age in years 30; Age as of February 29, 2024
Birth year 1993 or 1994. Earliest date of birth March 1, 1993; latest February 28, 1994.
1994 has no February 29, so the window closes on February 28.
Working out a birth year from old records
Family historians meet this problem constantly. A census return, a ship's passenger list or a gravestone often gives an age but no date of birth. Subtracting the age from the year of the record gives one candidate year, but the real answer may be the year before.
Set Age as of to the date the record was taken, not today's date. A person listed as 34 on a census taken on April 1, 1940 was born between April 2, 1905 and April 1, 1906. With the census day that early in the year, most 34-year-olds had not yet had their 1940 birthday, so 1905 is the likelier year, but 1906 remains possible.
Two cautions apply. Ages in older records were often rounded, guessed or reported by someone else, so treat the window as a search range and not a proof. And some cultures counted age differently: in traditional East Asian reckoning a baby is 1 at birth and gains a year at New Year, which shifts the answer by one or two years. This page uses the international system throughout.
When you need a birth year from an age
- Filling in a form that asks for year of birth for a child, parent or patient when you only remember their age.
- Checking an age-gated cutoff, such as which birth years are 18 or 21 on a given date.
- Working out which school year group or sports age category a child falls into from their age on the cutoff date.
- Dating a photograph or record from the stated age of someone in it.
- Estimating an ancestor's birth year from a census, marriage or death record before searching birth registers.
- Sanity-checking a date of birth that someone has typed against the age they gave.
