Why use Height Converter
180 cm is 5 ft 10.87 in, which rounds to 5 ft 11 in. To convert any height, divide the centimetres by 2.54 to get inches, count the whole 12s as feet and keep the remainder as inches. This converter does that and goes the other way too: choose centimetres, feet and inches, metres or total inches as the starting unit, and it returns feet and inches to two decimals, the nearest whole inch, the nearest half inch, centimetres, metres, total inches and decimal feet. It also lists the heights either side of yours, so you can see where the rounding to a whole inch changes.
Height chart: 140 cm to 210 cm in feet and inches
Every whole centimetre from 150 to 200, and every 5 cm outside that range. The second column keeps two decimals of an inch; the third rounds to the nearest whole inch.

Each row is this converter's own output for that height. A whole inch covers 2.54 cm, so two or three neighbouring centimetre values share the same nearest inch.
Feet and inches to cm chart, 4'8" to 6'8"
Each inch step adds exactly 2.54 cm, so these values are exact, not rounded.

The formula for centimetres to feet and inches
inches = cm ÷ 2.54; feet = whole part of (inches ÷ 12); inches left = inches − feet × 12
One inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm and one foot is 12 inches, so there is no approximation in the conversion itself. For 172 cm: 172 ÷ 2.54 = 67.7165 in. 67.7165 ÷ 12 gives 5 whole feet, which is 60 in. 67.7165 − 60 = 7.7165 in left over, so 172 cm is 5 ft 7.72 in. Going back, multiply: (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54 = cm. The converter rounds the total inches first and splits afterwards, so a height such as 182.87 cm shows as 6 ft 0 in and never as 5 ft 12 in.

A height from a passport in centimetres
Convert from: Centimetres (cm); Height: 172
5 ft 7.72 in; nearest whole inch 5 ft 8 in; nearest half inch 5 ft 7.5 in; 67.72 in; 1.72 m; 5.643 ft
A height in feet and inches for a metric form
Convert from: Feet and inches; Feet: 6; Inches: 2
187.96 cm; 1.8796 m; 74 in; 6.1667 ft
Working shown: 6 ft × 12 = 72 in, 72 in + 2 in = 74 in, 74 in × 2.54 = 187.96 cm.
A height given in metres
Convert from: Metres (m); Height: 1.6
5 ft 2.99 in; nearest whole inch 5 ft 3 in; 160 cm; 62.99 in
Total inches from a tape measure
Convert from: Inches (total); Height: 65
5 ft 5 in; 165.1 cm; 1.651 m; 5.4167 ft
A half inch
Convert from: Feet and inches; Feet: 5; Inches: 7.5
171.45 cm; 1.7145 m; 67.5 in
More than 11 inches typed in
Convert from: Feet and inches; Feet: 5; Inches: 14
6 ft 2 in; 187.96 cm
Feet and inches are added, so 14 inches carries one foot over.
Which rounding to use for a height
Spoken heights are almost always whole inches, so the Nearest whole inch figure is the one to say or write on an informal form. It hides up to half an inch (1.27 cm) either way: 177 cm, 178 cm and 179 cm all come out as 5 ft 10 in.
Use the two-decimal Feet and inches figure when the number will be converted again or compared, for example in a medical record or a sports listing. Use Nearest half inch when a form or a tailor asks for half inches.
Decimal feet are a different thing from feet and inches. 5.5 ft means five and a half feet, which is 5 ft 6 in, not 5 ft 5 in. The Decimal feet result is there for spreadsheets and formulas; do not read its digits as inches.
If an official document asks for centimetres and you only know feet and inches, give the converted figure to the nearest whole centimetre unless told otherwise: 5 ft 7 in is 170.18 cm, so 170 cm.
What the converter does not do
- It converts lengths between units only. It does not compare two heights or estimate a child's adult height.
- The largest height it accepts is 100,000 cm, and it rejects zero and negative values.
- Fractions such as 5 7/8 must be typed as decimals (5.875). The nearest half inch is the only fractional rounding offered.
- Results use ft and in rather than the ' and " marks in the main figures; the marks appear in the Summary line and the tables.
Using Height Converter
- 1
Pick the unit you have in Convert from: Centimetres (cm), Feet and inches, Metres (m) or Inches (total).
- 2
For centimetres, metres or inches, type the number in Height (cm, metres or inches), for example 180.
- 3
For feet and inches, fill in Feet and Inches instead, for example 5 and 11. The Height box is ignored in this mode.
- 4
Read Feet and inches for the precise figure and Nearest whole inch for the one people say out loud.
- 5
Copy the Summary line if you need the height in every unit, or check the table of heights either side.
