Quick answers

How do you convert military time to regular time?
For 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hour and add PM: 1730 is 5:30 PM. For 0100 to 1159, keep the hour and add AM: 0545 is 5:45 AM. 0000 to 0059 is the 12 AM hour and 1200 to 1259 is the 12 PM hour.
What is 1700 in military time?
1700 is 5:00 PM. Subtract 12 from 17 to get 5, and because the hour is past noon it is PM. It is said seventeen hundred hours.
What is 3 PM in military time?
3 PM is 1500. Add 12 to any PM hour from 1 to 11, so 3 + 12 = 15, and write it with two zeros for the minutes. It is said fifteen hundred hours.
What is 2100 in regular time?
2100 is 9:00 PM. 21 minus 12 is 9, and the hour is after noon, so it is PM.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both refer to midnight. 0000 is the start of a day and 2400 is the end of the day before, and each equals 12:00 AM. Times after midnight always use 00, so a quarter past midnight is 0015, not 2415.
What is 12 PM in military time?
12 PM (noon) is 1200. Noon is the one PM hour that does not have 12 added. 12 AM (midnight) is 0000.
How do you say military time?
Say the hour and the minutes as two pairs, with a leading zero spoken. 0545 is zero five forty-five, 1730 is seventeen thirty, and a time on the hour ends in hundred: 0800 is zero eight hundred hours, 2000 is twenty hundred hours.

What Military Time Converter does

Military time counts the hours of the day from 00 to 23 and writes the time as four digits with no colon and no AM or PM, so 5:30 PM is 1730. To convert by hand, subtract 12 from any hour from 13 to 23 and call it PM; hours 01 to 11 are AM as they stand, 00 is 12 AM and 12 is 12 PM. This military time converter works in both directions from one box. Type a 24-hour time and it returns the standard time; type a time with AM or PM and it returns the four-digit form. Each result also shows the rule that was applied and the spoken version, such as seventeen thirty hours.

Rules for converting between 24-hour and 12-hour time

The minutes never change. Only the hour and the AM or PM label do.

  • 0000 to 0059: the hour becomes 12 and the time is AM. 0030 is 12:30 AM.
  • 0100 to 1159: the hour stays as it is, without the leading zero, and the time is AM. 0715 is 7:15 AM.
  • 1200 to 1259: the hour stays 12 and the time is PM. 1245 is 12:45 PM.
  • 1300 to 2359: subtract 12 from the hour and the time is PM. 2215 is 10:15 PM.
  • 12:00 AM to 12:59 AM: the hour becomes 00. 12:30 AM is 0030.
  • 1:00 AM to 11:59 AM: keep the hour and write it with two digits. 9:05 AM is 0905.
  • 12:00 PM to 12:59 PM: the hour stays 12. 12:45 PM is 1245.
  • 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM: add 12 to the hour. 6:45 PM is 1845.

Military time, the 24-hour clock and Zulu time

Military time and the 24-hour clock count the day the same way. The difference is in how the time is written and spoken. The 24-hour clock used on timetables and in most of the world puts a colon between hours and minutes, as in 17:30. Military usage drops the colon, always writes four digits, and adds the word hours when speaking: 1730 hours. The converter shows both so you can use whichever your form or schedule expects.

A four-digit military time says nothing about the time zone. When a zone is needed, a letter is added after the digits. The best known is Z, spoken Zulu, which marks Coordinated Universal Time (UTC): 1730Z is 17:30 UTC wherever you are. This page converts the notation only. It does not shift a time between zones, so to turn 1730Z into your local time use a time zone converter after reading the hour here.

The 24-hour form removes the two usual sources of error in 12-hour time: leaving off AM or PM, and confusion over whether 12:00 AM is noon or midnight. That is why it is standard for shift rosters, medical charts, transport timetables and logs.

How to get your result

  1. 1

In Time, type the time you have. For military or 24-hour time use 1730, 17:30 or 0545. For standard time include AM or PM, as in 5:30 PM or 5pm.

  2. 2

If your time has no AM or PM and you do not mean 24-hour time, change If no AM or PM is typed to Treat it as AM or Treat it as PM.

  3. 3

Read Military time, Standard (12-hour) time and 24-hour clock under the result heading, plus Said aloud for the spoken form.

  4. 4

Check the How it converts table for the rule used on the hour, then copy the Summary line if you need the answer as a sentence.

Common questions

Do I have to type four digits?
No. 1730, 17:30, 930, 9:30 and a bare hour such as 17 are all read as 24-hour time, and the result is always written back as four digits. The word hours after the digits is ignored, so 1730 hours works too.
What happens if I type 5:30 with no AM or PM?
It is read as 24-hour time, giving 0530 and 5:30 AM, and a note explains the assumption. Add PM to the time, or set the option beside it to Treat it as PM, to get 1730 instead.
Is there a 2430 or 2500 in military time?
No. The hour runs from 00 to 23, and 2400 exists only as the exact end of a day. Half past midnight is 0030. The converter rejects hours above 23 other than 2400, and minutes above 59.
Why is 12 AM written as 0000 and not 1200?
The 24-hour day starts counting from zero at midnight, so the first hour is hour 00. 1200 is twelve hours later, at noon. In 12-hour time both are numbered 12, which is the source of the confusion.
Does military time use a colon?
Not in military writing: the time is four digits run together, such as 0930. The 24-hour clock used by civilians writes the same time as 09:30. The converter gives both forms in every result.
Can it convert a time with seconds?
Yes. Enter six digits such as 173045, or a colon form such as 2:15:09 PM. The seconds are carried through to every output, and the spoken form adds them at the end.
Does it convert Zulu or UTC time to my local time?
No. It changes the notation between 24-hour and 12-hour and leaves the time zone alone. A trailing Z is not accepted in the box; remove it, convert the digits, and apply the zone difference separately.
Do the Army, Navy and Air Force say times the same way?
The written four-digit form is the same. Spoken habits vary: some say zero and others oh for a leading 0, and the word hours is sometimes dropped. The Said aloud line uses zero and includes hours.
