Quick answers

How do I come up with a random username?
Combine two unrelated words and a number, which is what this tool does: an adjective, a noun and a number from 1 to 999, such as QuietNomad628. Avoid your real name, birth year, town or anything else that identifies you or links your accounts.
Are the generated usernames available?
Not necessarily. The tool cannot look up any site's accounts, so you have to try the name on the sign-up form. Names with the number ticked are far more likely to be free: there are 575,424 of those against only 576 word-only pairs.
How many different usernames can this generator make?
575,424 with the number on: 24 adjectives x 24 nouns x 999 numbers. With the number off there are 576. The Possible combinations figure under the results shows the count for your current settings.
What is a good username format for most websites?
Letters and numbers with no punctuation, 15 characters or fewer. Nearly every site accepts that, including ones that reject dots or underscores. Use the AdjectiveNoun42 style and set Max length to the site's limit.
Is it safer to use a random username?
It helps privacy. A username built from random words reveals nothing about you and, if you use a different one per site, makes it harder to connect your accounts. It does not replace a strong, unique password and two-step verification.

What Random Username Generator does

This tool builds each username from one random adjective, one random noun and, if you want it, a number from 1 to 999, for results like NimbleDragon484, sunny.turtle348 or brave_shark_996. It draws from 24 adjectives and 24 nouns, which gives 576 word pairs and 575,424 possible names once the number is added. You can make 1 to 50 at a time, choose from three styles and set a maximum length for sites with short limits. The names contain nothing about you, which makes them a reasonable choice for accounts you want kept apart from your real identity. The tool cannot check whether a name is already taken anywhere, and it does not accept your own words or name as input.

Example usernames in each style

Real batches from the tool. Yours will differ each time you press Generate.

Joined words with a number

Style: AdjectiveNoun42, Add a random number ticked, How many: 5

NimbleDragon484, SunnyTurtle348, BraveShark996, SunnyHawk945, QuietNomad628

Lowercase with a dot

Style: adjective.noun42, Add a random number ticked, How many: 5

nimble.dragon484, sunny.turtle348, brave.shark996, sunny.hawk945, quiet.nomad628

The dot goes between the words only; the number follows the noun directly.

Lowercase with underscores

Style: adjective_noun_42, Add a random number ticked, How many: 5

nimble_dragon_484, sunny_turtle_348, brave_shark_996, sunny_hawk_945, quiet_nomad_628

This style puts a second underscore before the number.

Words only

Style: AdjectiveNoun42, Add a random number unticked, How many: 5

NimbleDragon, SneakyWizard, ElectricRaven, BraveShark, NimbleWizard

Possible combinations drops to 576, so expect many of these to be taken on large sites.

Cut to 12 characters

Style: AdjectiveNoun42, Add a random number ticked, Max length: 12, How many: 6

NimbleDragon, SunnyTurtle3, BraveShark99, SunnyHawk945, QuietNomad62, GoldenHawk30

Max length trims from the end, so digits and sometimes letters are lost. NimbleDragon484 became NimbleDragon.

Username length limits and allowed characters by platform

Use this to choose a Style and a Max length before you generate. Max length accepts values up to 32.

Limits are the ones each service publishes for its sign-up form and can change; the form itself is the final word. The adjective_noun_42 style contains two underscores, which Roblox does not allow.

How long the generated usernames are

Adjectives in the list run from 4 to 8 letters and nouns from 3 to 7, so lengths fall in these ranges when Max length is 0.

StyleWithout a numberWith a number
AdjectiveNoun427 to 15 characters8 to 18 characters
adjective.noun428 to 16 characters9 to 19 characters
adjective_noun_428 to 16 characters10 to 20 characters

The shortest pair is WildFox or BoldFox; the longest are ElectricPhoenix and ElectricPanther.

The words the generator chooses from

Every username uses one word from each list. The lists are fixed and cannot be edited.

  • Adjectives (24): Swift, Brave, Clever, Mighty, Silent, Golden, Crimson, Frosty, Lucky, Jolly, Fuzzy, Sneaky, Electric, Cosmic, Rusty, Velvet, Wild, Gentle, Bold, Sunny, Stormy, Quiet, Radiant, Nimble.
  • Nouns (24): Falcon, Tiger, Panda, Wolf, Otter, Comet, Phoenix, Dragon, Raven, Fox, Lynx, Hawk, Turtle, Panther, Cobra, Eagle, Badger, Koala, Shark, Wizard, Ninja, Pirate, Robot, Nomad.
  • Number: a whole number from 1 to 999, written without leading zeros, so it adds one, two or three digits.

Why a name can still be taken, and what to do about it

The word lists are short on purpose: common, friendly words give names that are easy to say and remember. The cost is that the 576 plain pairs, such as SwiftFalcon or BoldNinja, are exactly the kind of thing other people think of too, so on a site with millions of accounts most of them will already be registered. The number is what makes a name likely to be free. It multiplies every pair by 999.

If a name you like is taken, the quickest fixes are to generate again with the number ticked, switch style where the site allows punctuation, or keep the words and change the number by hand. Within one batch the tool never repeats a name, so with no length limit a list of 50 gives you 50 different candidates to try.

Choosing a username that does not give you away

  • Leave out your real name, initials, birth year, postcode and employer. Those are the first things someone uses to link an account to a person.
  • Use a different username on accounts you want kept separate, such as gaming, forums and marketplace selling.
  • Do not reuse part of your email address. On many sites the username is public while the email is not.
  • Avoid a number that means something to you. A random 1 to 999 is safer than the year you were born.
  • Read the name aloud and check it joined up before committing; two harmless words can form an unintended one when run together.

How to get your result

  1. 1

Set How many to the number of usernames you want to choose from, from 1 to 50.

  2. 2

Pick a Style: AdjectiveNoun42 for joined capitalised words, adjective.noun42 for lowercase with a dot, or adjective_noun_42 for lowercase with underscores.

  3. 3

Leave Add a random number ticked to append a number from 1 to 999, or untick it for words only.

  4. 4

If the site has a character limit, enter it in Max length (0 = no limit). Longer names are cut to fit.

  5. 5

Press Generate, then copy a name you like or download the whole list as usernames.txt. Press Generate again for a fresh batch.

Answers to common questions

Can I include my own name or a keyword in the username?
No. The tool only combines its built-in adjectives and nouns. You can copy a result and edit it by hand, for example swapping the noun for a word of your own, but there is no input for custom words.
Can I use these as gamertags?
Yes. The AdjectiveNoun42 style suits most games and consoles because it has no punctuation. Set Max length to the platform's limit, for example 12 for an Xbox gamertag or 16 for Minecraft and PlayStation, and check the result reads well after trimming.
What does Max length do to a name that is too long?
It cuts characters off the end until the name fits. That usually removes some or all of the number and can shorten the noun, so ElectricPhoenix at Max length 12 would become ElectricPhoe. Generate a larger batch and pick names that survived intact. With a very short limit many names trim to the same text, and the list can then be shorter than the number you asked for.
Why do the dot and underscore styles use lowercase?
Many sites that allow separators treat usernames as lowercase or require it, and the separator already shows where one word ends. The joined style keeps capitals because they are the only thing marking the word boundary.
Can two people get the same username from this tool?
Yes. Everyone draws from the same lists, so the same name can be generated for different people. That is another reason to test it on the site straight away and to keep the number switched on.
Does it generate usernames in a particular theme, such as cute or aesthetic?
No. There is one mixed word list of animals, characters and descriptive adjectives. There are no theme, language or personality settings.
Is a random username enough to stay anonymous?
No. It removes one obvious link to you, but sites still see your email address, IP address and whatever you post. Treat it as one sensible habit alongside a separate email address and careful sharing.
