What does lorem ipsum mean?: Nothing as written. It is scrambled Latin taken from a work by Cicero, and lorem is not a word: it is the tail end of dolorem, meaning pain. The source phrase dolorem ipsum means pain itself.
Why do designers use lorem ipsum instead of real text?: Readable text pulls attention to the wording. Filler that looks like language but cannot be read lets people judge fonts, spacing and layout. It also fills a design before the real copy has been written.

What Lorem Ipsum Generator does

Choose Paragraphs, Sentences or Words, enter a number from 1 to 100 and press Generate. Paragraphs contain 4 to 7 sentences, and each sentence has 8 to 18 words, so one paragraph averages roughly 70 words and three paragraphs come to about 210. Words mode gives exactly the number you ask for, up to 100. A Length panel reports the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in the result. By default the text opens with the familiar Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit; untick that box and it starts with random words instead. The rest is shuffled from a list of 77 Latin-style words, so it looks like lorem ipsum but is not the fixed classic passage.

How long is lorem ipsum? Words and characters by paragraph count

The standard lorem ipsum passage

If you need the classic wording exactly, for example to match an existing template, this is the standard 69-word passage:

The generator on this page reproduces only the first eight words of it. Everything after the opening is drawn at random from the passage's vocabulary plus a few more words from the same source text, so sentences do not follow the original order. For layout work that makes no difference, and it avoids every block on a page looking identical.

Where lorem ipsum comes from

The text derives from De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work Cicero wrote in 45 BC. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 contain the source, including the phrase neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit: nor is there anyone who loves or pursues pain itself because it is pain. Lorem ipsum is that passage with words dropped, shortened and reordered, which is why it cannot be translated as it stands.

The link to Cicero was identified by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, who traced the rare word consectetur to the original. The text is often said to date from a printer's type specimen in the 1500s, but the earliest firm evidence of its use is from the 1960s, when Letraset printed it on dry-transfer lettering sheets. It reached a much wider audience in the 1980s as sample text in the desktop publishing program Aldus PageMaker.

Things to watch when using filler text

Search for lorem before you publish. Placeholder text left on a live page, in a meta description or in an email template is one of the most common launch mistakes.
Test with real content before sign-off. Filler hides long headlines, short testimonials, empty states and names that do not fit the column.
German and Finnish words often run much longer than these Latin-style ones, and Chinese, Japanese and Arabic text wraps differently. If your site is multilingual, test layouts in those languages too.
Screen readers read filler aloud as gibberish. Do not leave it in anything given to users for accessibility testing.
Untick the classic opening when filling several boxes on one page, so that cards and columns do not all begin with the same words.

Answers to common questions

Can I generate more than 100 words?

Not in Words mode, which stops at 100. For longer text switch to Paragraphs: 3 paragraphs average roughly 210 words, 10 about 710 and the maximum of 100 paragraphs about 7,150, with some variation from run to run. Trim the result if you need an exact figure.

Is the generated text the same every time?

No. Each press of Generate reshuffles the words, so lengths and wording change from run to run. Only the opening Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit stays constant, and only while its box is ticked.

Does the character count include spaces?

Yes. The Characters figure counts every letter, space and punctuation mark, plus the line breaks between paragraphs. There is no separate count without spaces.

Can I get lorem ipsum wrapped in HTML paragraph tags?

No. The output is plain text with a blank line between paragraphs. Most editors and content systems turn those breaks into paragraphs when you paste; otherwise add the tags yourself.

Can I generate lorem ipsum by number of characters or bytes?

Not directly. Choose a word or sentence count, read the Characters figure in the Length panel and adjust. As a guide, 25 words come to about 170 characters and 100 words to about 690.

Is lorem ipsum real Latin?

Partly. Most of the words are genuine Latin, but the passage has been cut up so that it has no grammar or meaning, and a few items such as lorem are fragments of longer words. A Latin reader would recognise the vocabulary but could not translate it.

Is lorem ipsum copyrighted?

No. Cicero's original is around two thousand years old and in the public domain, and the scrambled filler has been used freely by printers and designers for decades. You can use it in commercial templates and mock-ups without permission or credit.

Does leftover placeholder text hurt a live website?

Yes. Visitors see an unfinished page and lose confidence in it, and nonsense text tells nobody what the page is about. Replace every block with real copy, including image alt text and page descriptions, before launch.
