About the Lorem Ipsum Generator

Cicero, De Finibus and the missing first syllables
The text is a corrupted extract from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a treatise on ethics that Cicero completed in 45 BC. The relevant passage begins Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit — roughly, there is nobody who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain. The familiar opening is a fragment of dolorem ipsum with its first syllables lost, which is why lorem is not a Latin word at all and why the passage cannot be translated as it stands. Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College, traced the origin in the 1980s by looking up the unusual word consectetur in classical literature. The text is generally thought to have entered typography in the 1500s when a printer scrambled a specimen sheet, and it reached modern designers through Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s and later through Aldus PageMaker.
Why meaningless text is the point
Placeholder text works precisely because nobody can read it. Real copy in a mockup pulls a review meeting towards the words — whether the headline is right, whether the tone fits — when the question on the table is spacing, hierarchy and rhythm. Latin-derived filler has a second useful property: its distribution of word and sentence lengths sits close enough to English that line breaks, hyphenation and the ragged right edge look believable. The trade-off is real, though. Lorem ipsum hides exactly the problems that only genuine content produces: headlines running to three lines, product names longer than the column, empty states, and the awkwardness of a testimonial that turns out to be two sentences when the design assumed five. Content-first practice argues for swapping in real or realistic copy as early as you can; the placeholder is scaffolding for the first pass, not a substitute for writing.
Tips
