Why the range stops at 3999

Classical Roman numerals use seven symbols — I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000) — combined additively and, for four specific cases per magnitude, subtractively (IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM). Repeating M three times covers up to 3000, and the largest valid combination below the next thousand is CMXCIX (999), making MMMCMXCIX (3999) the highest number the standard system can express without inventing new symbols or an overline notation for multiplying by 1000.

Tips

  • Lowercase input works too — mcmxciv converts the same as MCMXCIV.
  • A numeral like IIII for 4 is sometimes seen on clock faces for symmetry, but it isn't standard subtractive notation; this tool only produces and accepts the standard form (IV).
  • There's no standard Roman numeral for zero — the concept simply isn't represented in the classical system.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a 1-3999 limit?
Standard Roman numerals have no symbol for zero and no standard way to represent 4000 or above using just I, V, X, L, C, D and M — 3999 (MMMCMXCIX) is the largest number the classical system can write unambiguously.
How does the tool know which direction to convert?
If what you enter is all digits, it converts number → Roman numeral. If it contains letters, it treats them as a Roman numeral and converts back to a number — so you can paste either into the same box.
Does it accept lowercase Roman numerals?
Yes — input is uppercased automatically before parsing, so mcmxciv and MCMXCIV both work.
